[NEWS] 100518 Idols are disappearing, ballads are taking over

On music sites' music charts, idol singers are disappearing. For the first time in 4 years, the pop market is starting to change its stance from idol dance songs.

If one was to look at Mnet.com's popular chart on the 17th, s/he could see that the 1st was Vibe's 'Please come back', 2nd was 8Eight's 'The End is Coming', 3rd was Vibe's 'Are You Crazy', 4th was Brown Eyed Soul's 'Love Ballad' and likewise, showing that the higher ranks were taken over by emotional ballads.

In Melon and Cyworld Music's cases as well, in 1st place, on the 16th, was taken up by Wonder Girls' new song 'Two Different Tears', but the majority of the higher ranking were taken up by Vibe, Davichi, Hot Potato, and 8Eight.

If one was to think that starting from 2007, after Wonder Girls' 'Tell Me', BigBang, 2PM, Girls' Generation, 2NE1, After School, 4Minute had taken the 1st place spot in turns, this is truthfully a big fall for the idol industry.

Pop/Music officials attribute this to the public becoming slowly sick of idol dance music.

A popular music critic Im Jinmo-sshi scrutinized, "After about 2~3 years, (the public) gets sick of the trend", continuing, "They're tired of the repeating melodies and lyrics in the hook songs, which are the main components in idol dance music. Especially, the Wonder Girls' Sunmi's withdrawal as well as Girls' Generation 'Run Devil Run's failure, the change of state in the two strongest girl groups, has affected the weakening of the overall idol culture.

Producer Jo YoungSoo, who had stood at the middle of the 2005~2007 medium tempo ballad boom, said, "There was a time when the trend was towards the new medium-tempo ballads, but the people got sick of it after 3 years. It's because of the imitating of the idol groups' special styles of similar autotunes and tempos. Meanwhile, groups that had strong vocal power started appearing like Brown Eyed Soul, Vibe, Davichi, etc., making the wind of change blow".

SGWannabe's Lee SukHoon also judged, "Whenever netizens' comments about idol group music are read, the expression 'autotune' is most frequently used. Because music fans are starting to feel tired of the autotuning, it seems to be that they're starting to look for vocal-based music. I think this will start another flow".

Some people have the opinion that the Chun-Ahm ship incident might've started it. Although how the young people spend (time & money) in the popular cultures doesn't really go hand in hand with the stances of politics and social incidents, the Chun-Ahm ship sinking might have affected the fall of idol music some.

A representative of an idol group's company said, "After the Chun-Ahm ship incident, when most of the music programs got canceled for 5~6 weeks, it became harder for performance-showing singers such as Rain, Lee Hyori, and idol groups to maintain a rising stance. Coincidentially at this stage, a lot of capable ballad singers who are receiving a lot of expectation from the public, released a lot of emotional songs, effectively burying idol music".

However, there are different opinions on how idol groups' music will be received further on in the pop industry.

Jo YoungSoo-sshi said, "These days, the quality of idol music is good so it had already built the public's trust in itself. Even if one song doesn't meet expectations, there is still anticipation for the next song, which makes the trend last longer. Like how the first songs of Wonder Girls and Big Bang was new, if they (the idols) maintain changes in music and keep it fresh, it'll be easy for them to stand back up because they will still have their basic fan bases".

On the other hand, Im Jinmo-sshi foresaw, "In the summer of 2007, there was a sudden incline in the ballad trend- I think that ballads will have the upper hand in this summer too. In this year, as the average citizens' economy is being pressured, the overall atmosphere will be rather down until when the economy restores itself at the end of the year, so ballads will be more popular. If ballads recover, then idols' dance songs will be in danger".

Even though there are different perspectives, there is no doubt that many genres existing in the music market will make it proper.

An experienced singer in the 40's said, "Instead of leaning into a specific genre at a specific era, it would be best if many genres like ballad, dance, folk, rock, trot, etc., exist in one music chart evenly".
