“‘Cinderella Sister’ is like my first baby step. Just like how you can’t forget the time you first started walking, I can never forget this drama.”
Now, he’s an ‘Actor Idol.’ Idol group 2PM’s Taecyeon became an actor. Taecyeon debuted as an actor through drama ‘Cinderella Sister.’ In the drama, he has the role of Jungwoo, who decides that he will devote the rest of his life to Eunjo (acted by Moon Geun Young) simply because of a warm dish of rice she made for him when he was little.
In the drama, Taecyeon, who was picked as the representative for ‘wild idol’ because of a hot performance on stage, succeeded in completely transforming into the straightforward and ‘honest guy’ Jungwoo. Fortunately, Taecyeon, who worked really hard, didn’t have any ‘acting issues’ that come up a lot when singers become actors.
I met him on June 6th, the day the last episode of ‘Cinderella Sister’ airs.
- The drama ends today; how do you feel?
▶Bittersweet. I was filming in addition to promoting my album so it was very tiring but it ended well. I’m a little sad but I’m also happy because I was able to show another side of me.
- If you had to define ‘Cinderella Sister’ in a few words.
▶My baby step. At home, I have a picture of me walking for the first time and I can’t seem to forget that moment. This is my first drama so I will remember it forever.
- You were a character who will do anything for his love. Are you that way in real life?
▶I think I am. I’m not a bad boy. However, I think Jungwoo is too cowardly. He liked her for 10 years but he couldn’t even confess to her so personally, I was very upset about that. If it were me, I think I would’ve confessed a little strongly. I think the character is slightly different from me.
- Was acting fun?
▶At first, it was scary. I think in the beginning, the director didn’t know it was my first time acting. He said something but I didn’t do anything because I didn’t know what he meant so I got into trouble. But later, he gave a lot of advice and helped me a lot.
- What grade would you give to your acting skills?
▶I actually rarely cry but when I think about sad times, I was able to cry. I think I did well in that part.
- Did you take any acting lessons?
▶Before filming, I took a couple. But the teacher was busier than I was so I mostly practiced the vocalizations. That was a little disappointing too. If the teacher was able to help me a little more, I could’ve done better.
- Are you satisfied with your appearance as an actor?
▶I’m happy with the appearance my parents gave me. People said that it is a little disappointing that I lost a lot of weight in my cheeks. I plan on gaining some weight.
- Jungwoo was a naive character; are you happy with that?
▶At first, it was very upsetting. To look innocent, he even had straight bangs and wore rustic clothes too but I thought that he could’ve looked a little more handsome since it is my first time acting. But when I thought of Jungwoo’s role, I understood the way he looked. Next time, I want to wear good-looking clothes.
- How did you feel when you got a request to be on ‘Cinderella Sister’?
▶I worried a lot. I wasn’t sure whether I would do well or not. When I got the synopsis, I showed it to various people so I can figure out whether I would be right for the character. The 2PM members opposed. We were preparing for an album so they thought it would be hard managing both the album promotions and the filming. They were worried that if I wasn’t able to do it, not only would my image be ruined but 2PM’s image would be ruined too. Actually, there were a lot of people who objected. Park Jin Young said I would be able to do it and said okay. There were only about 4 people who said to do it: my dance teacher, my boss, Park Jin Young, and my mom.
- What did your mom say?
▶My mom wishes that I would do various things. She said that even though I might not be able to do well because it’s my first time, it will be a good experience.
- What were the 2PM members’ evaluations?
▶I don’t know if it was because of I was in it but they were all fans of ‘Cinderella Sister.’ While watching the drama, Nickhun says what scenes were done well; Chansung helps me with acting practice. When I say some cliché lines, they yell ‘Wow!’ (laughs)
- I heard Moon Geun Young helped you a lot; how was your first impression of her?
▶I first met MGY (Moon Geun Young) at a dinner and I went late because of a music show I was in. I was thinking, “Oh isn’t she the ‘nation’s younger sister?’ I saw her a lot before too so it was really cool; she asked me how old I was then she was like okay I won’t use formal language. I thought she was easygoing. And then she gave me a glass of beer as a punishment so I thought again that she was laid-back. MGY also said that I look like I’m older than her and asked me if the age I said was really my age. She asked, “Don’t a lot of singers lie about their age?” I’m sorry that I look older than my age. (laughs)
- Did MGY teach you about acting?
▶She asked me, “With what feelings do you say your lines or look at someone? I think she wanted to hear the answer to the question ‘Why?’ When I explain, she tells me all kinds of things. Because MGY kept asking me, I was able to think more about the scenes.
- What does MGY think of 2PM?
▶She likes Junsu from all of us so I was hurt (laughs). She knew all of our songs so I was honestly shocked.
- There are rumors that MGY was like a leader in the military to you.
▶Because she has been acting for so much longer than I have, I followed her a lot. She gave a lot of advice on the mood of the filming set and acting. I think that’s why she earned the nickname ‘lieutenant.’
- Did you ever feel other feelings for MGY?
▶(hesitates for a while) I like her. She’s charming. (laughs)
- How would she be as a girlfriend?
▶I think I’d like that. She takes care of me a lot.
- Were there any members who were jealous that you got to act?
▶The members all want an opportunity to act so they were all jealous. Chansung was envious the most but he gave a lot of advice too.
- You debuted as an actor; do you have any greed for the next drama?
▶I want to film another drama soon. This was my first time and it was really fun so I want to do another one as soon as possible. I want to find another character and film another drama.
- What do you regret the most?
▶Because this was my first time acting, I didn’t know a lot about words used in the filming set. They said some weird things so at first, I didn’t understand and got into trouble a lot. I think a lot that it would’ve been nice if I started acting after I learned some of the filming terms.
-If you had to give your acting skills a grade, what would you give?
▶First of all, I think not getting insulted is good enough. I think a lot of people responded positively. I think they weren’t expecting a lot from me since it was my first time. I’m thankful that they looked at my acting positively.
- You competed with Seulong.
▶The dramas were so different that we were supporting each other rather than competing. During the filming days, we even met and talked a lot. We both had a lot of difficulties because it was our first time acting. I think that’s why we were able to help each other.
- What scene or line did you like the best?
▶I think the scene I proposed was the best. (Episode 19)
- What cliché line did you like the most?
▶The scene/line I liked the most was at the lake when Jungwoo handed Eunjo his bank account and said ‘I lived with you since I was little’; it made me get goosebumps.
- Wasn’t the accent acting hard?
▶I practiced the line said with the accent in episode 5 over and over again with Wooyoung and Junsu. The first line was ‘Do you not know me?’ and the members were able to memorize it and recite it again and again. (laughs) There were filming staff that came from Busan so I learned a lot from them.
- What kinds of acting do you want to do in the future?
▶At the filming set, a lot of people said historical dramas were fun. I think historical dramas will be fun. I want to do one of those. Maybe a general? (laughs) Or even a king. I want to have a charismatic role. Jugnwoo was innocent so it was a gentle character but I want to be a strong manly character.
- Lastly, what do you want to tell the viewers?
▶I know there were a lot of flaws in my acting but I want to thank them for still loving me and the drama. I will be back with a new side, different from Jungwoo’s character.
