From Jaebum to Hyunjoong… New Cultural Authority, the ‘fanclub’

[OSEN=reporter Lee Myungjoo] How are celebrity fanclubs, which have risen to be a new power group in today’s mainstream pop culture, structured and run? Cable broadcasting SBS E!TV ‘E! News Korea’ dug up the inner side of celebrity fanclubs and provided saturation coverageon fandom culture.

According to the producers, if fans in the past lovingly gazed at their favourite star through mediums such as TV, advertisements and magazines, then the fans of now move systematically by creating a fanclub.

It has become known that at one idol fanclub, the president was decided by their occupation, use of leisure time, as well as an interview conducted by the management company, undergoing strict processes. Additionally as cyberspace grew, it was reported that fans who have earned significant influence from their activity couldcontrol the management company and the stars.

On a related note, ‘E! News Korea’ dug up the incident of Park Jaebum, who was a 2PM member. Recently when JYP Entertainment officially announced the permanent secession of 2PM member Jaebum, they received much protest. They even held a fan conference on the fans’ request.

Especially, the fans who were involved in projects to return Jaebum asked that the programs that the rest of the members appeared on to be discontinued, and showed power by enthusiastically boycotting products that they were promoting.

One of the beverage companies that 2PM were models of revealed their worries saying, ‘The boycott had no real impact on our sales, but it is true that we are worried about the fans’ endless protests.’

On the opposite side, the fanclub sometimes leads in creating a positive image for their star. Recently, SS501 members Kim HyunJoong’s fanclub actively set out in charity work under his name, and singer Hwanhee’s fanclub did the promotional advertisements themselves, alongwith the release of his album. More about the evolving fandom culture can be seen on the 19th at SBSE!TV’s ‘E! News Korea’
